When a tooth cracks or a big old filling gives way, the first worry is usually the time: two appointments, a temporary crown in between, and a couple of weeks of chewing on the other side. At our Nyack dental office, we design, make and fit most crowns in a single visit. This post walks you through how a same-day crown works, what the appointment feels like, what it costs, and when to call us about a broken tooth.

Can a broken tooth really be fixed in one visit?

Yes, in most cases. We scan the tooth, design the crown on screen, mill it from a solid block of porcelain in our office, and bond it in place at the same appointment. You leave with the permanent crown on your tooth, so there's no temporary to protect and no second visit to book.

A crown covers the whole visible part of a damaged tooth and brings back its shape, strength and appearance. That's what makes it the usual repair once a tooth has broken or a filling has grown too large to hold. For a closer look at what crowns do, the American Dental Association explains it well on its MouthHealthy page about crowns.

What makes a same-day crown possible?

Everything happens under one roof at our Nyack dental office. A Primescan digital scanner captures your tooth in 3D, so you won't need a tray of impression putty. Dr. Bodie designs the crown on screen from that scan, a CEREC Primemill cuts it from a single block of porcelain, and a CEREC SpeedFire furnace finishes it before it's fitted.

Dr. Bodie first worked with this technology during an Army National Guard deployment, in a facility already scanning and milling crowns. After eight months with it, he brought digital dentistry home to Nyack, and it has shaped the way our practice works ever since.

What happens at a same-day crown appointment?

The visit follows a simple order, and you'll know what's coming at every step:

  1. Numbing. We numb the tooth with local anesthetic before preparing it. Patients often tell Dr. Bodie the injection was easier than they expected, because he goes slowly.
  2. Preparing and scanning. Dr. Bodie cleans up and shapes the damaged part of the tooth, then scans it.
  3. Designing. You can watch the crown take shape on screen as Dr. Bodie designs it to fit your bite and match your other teeth.
  4. Milling. Our mill cuts your crown from porcelain while you wait. That takes about an hour, and Dr. Bodie usually suggests a walk around downtown Nyack instead of sitting in the chair.
  5. Fitting. You come back, Dr. Bodie checks the crown and bonds it in place, and you're finished.

You'll always know how much time is left, and nothing starts until you've agreed to the plan and the cost.

How much does a same-day crown cost in Nyack, NY?

A same-day CEREC crown costs $1,800 at our Nyack dental office. That's the same fee as a conventional crown, with no extra charge for finishing it in one visit. Your consultation is free, we'll check your insurance benefits before you start, and Affirm and HFD can spread the cost into monthly payments. You can read more about dental insurance and payment options before you come in.

Is a same-day crown as strong as a lab-made crown?

Yes, and the fit is often better, because it's taken from a precise digital scan of your tooth. We mill your crown from a single solid block of porcelain, and the dentist who prepared your tooth designs it. How long any crown lasts depends mostly on the health of the tooth and gum underneath, and on whether you grind your teeth at night. If you do, Dr. Bodie may suggest a night guard to protect the new crown.

When should you see a dentist about a broken tooth?

Call us as soon as you notice a crack, a chipped cusp or a filling that has come loose, even if it doesn't hurt. Cracks tend to spread with chewing, and the American Association of Endodontists notes that the sooner a cracked tooth is treated, the better the outcome. Catching it early often means a crown can save the tooth.

If you're in real pain, we'll see you the same day, or first thing the next morning at the latest. Our same-day emergency care page explains what happens when you call, and our same-day CEREC crowns page covers the treatment in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a same-day crown appointment take?

Most of the visit is preparing, scanning and designing the tooth, and then about an hour while we mill the crown in our office. Many patients spend that hour walking around downtown Nyack. You come back, Dr. Bodie fits and bonds the crown, and you leave with the permanent crown in place.

Will I need a temporary crown?

No. Because we design, mill and fit your crown at our Nyack dental office in the same appointment, there's no temporary crown to protect, no second visit to book, and no stretch of chewing carefully on one side while you wait. Skipping that stage is what patients notice most.

Does getting a crown hurt?

We numb the tooth with local anesthetic before preparing it for a crown, so it involves minimal discomfort. Dr. Bodie takes the injection slowly, and patients often say it was easier than they expected. You'll always be told how much time is left while you're in the chair.

How much does a same-day crown cost in Nyack?

A same-day CEREC crown is $1,800 at our Nyack dental office, the same as a conventional crown. Your consultation is free, we check your insurance benefits before treatment starts, and Affirm and HFD can turn the cost into monthly payments if that helps.
