If just booking a dental appointment makes your stomach tighten, you're in good company, and there's nothing wrong with you for feeling that way. Plenty of people put off the dentist for years because of one bad memory, the sound of the drill, or the feeling of not knowing what's happening in their own mouth. Dr. Bodie designed our Nyack dental office for people who have never once enjoyed a dental visit. This post walks you through what a visit feels like, from the moment you walk in to the warm towel at the end.

What makes a dental visit easier if you're anxious?

Knowing what's happening makes the biggest difference. Dr. Bodie explains treatment the way he'd want it explained to him: you'll see your own scan on the screen, hear the plan in plain words, and know how many minutes are left while you're in the chair. The American Dental Association's tips for managing dental anxiety start in the same place, with talking openly to your dental team about what worries you.

Tell us you're nervous when you book, and we'll plan the whole appointment around it. We don't book or start anything until you're ready, and the decision is always yours.

What will the office feel like when you arrive?

Our Nyack dental office sits at 51 North Broadway, close to the Hudson, and Dr. Bodie built it to feel calm from the front door. The reception area has a 250-gallon saltwater aquarium and two waterfall features, diffusers run in the rooms, and a larger scent machine fills the lobby, so the whole place smells like anything but a clinic. Kids especially like trying to spot Nemo in the tank.

What happens once you're in the chair?

Three of our five treatment chairs are massage chairs. You can slip on a pair of goggles that play a beach scene with music, which is a far calmer place to spend your appointment than looking up at a ceiling tile. Every treatment room has a window for natural light, and Dr. Bodie often leaves the overhead lights off entirely. Your appointment ends with a warm scented towel, one of the small details patients mention most afterward.

How gentle is the treatment itself?

Gentler than most people expect. Dr. Bodie is Fotona-trained, and we do many of our fillings with the laser instead of a drill, which means no drill noise and no vibration. A lot of that smaller work doesn't need numbing at all. When a tooth does need anesthetic, patients regularly tell us Dr. Bodie is gentle with injections because he takes them slowly.

Is sedation available at our Nyack dental office?

Yes. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation for treatments like extractions, root canals and implants, if you'd rather be more relaxed. Dr. Bodie will talk through which option suits the treatment you need, so you know exactly what to expect before the day of your appointment.

When should you come in if you've been putting it off?

The best time is now, even if it's been years. Small problems are far easier to take care of when they're caught early, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research explains that early tooth decay can be stopped or reversed before it becomes a cavity. The longer a problem waits, the more treatment it usually needs.

Your first consultation is free, and there's no pressure to decide anything that day. You'll leave knowing what's going on, what's possible, and what it would cost. If calling feels like too much, you can text us at 845-358-5110, and a real person will answer. Our new patients page explains what your first visit looks like, and you can take a look around our office before you come in.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I'm scared of the dentist?

Tell us when you book. At our Nyack dental office we plan your appointment around it, explain every step before it happens, and let you know how much time is left. You can see your own scan on screen, and nothing starts until you've agreed to the plan and the cost.

Do you offer sedation for nervous patients?

Yes. We offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation at our Nyack dental office for treatments like extractions, root canals and implants. Dr. Bodie will talk you through which option fits your treatment, so you know exactly what to expect and can feel more relaxed before your appointment starts.

Can I text the office instead of calling?

Yes. You can text our office at 845-358-5110, and a real person answers, not an automated service. It's an easy way to ask a question or start booking your first visit if picking up the phone feels like too much right now.

Is my first visit really free?

Your first consultation is free. Dr. Bodie will look at what's going on, show you on screen, and explain what's possible and what it would cost. There's no pressure to make a decision that day, and we don't book anything unless you're ready.
